Foreword by Dr. Drew (excerpt) – ” I thought I knew Cheryl Dorsey. I did not. My respect and admiration for her have truly expanded. She rewards the reader (of her autobiography) with an inside first-hand account of law enforcement. If you have difficulty understanding why an NFL player would risk his career in his effort to raise awareness of a chronic problem, you will find your answers in these pages. Cheryl’s story will change your perspective. She gives you no alternative as she ferries the reader in to her world and across a career that not only bore witness to difficult history; but also offers insights and perspectives that could only be provided by her unique perspective as a woman; an African American woman; and a professional deeply committed to her career willing to honestly examine the shortcomings of that profession.

We have Cheryl’s account and her contributions to law enforcement. That is change. And part of the solution she reminds the reader, is us; our education about law enforcement and how to deal with our encounters with them. This book provides that practical wisdom in detail. That is change. There is reason to be optimistic. After all, we have Cheryl Dorsey.

“Sgt. Cheryl Dorsey lifts the lid off the boiling pot of police corruption, abuse and killings…shines her light and years of knowledgeable experience on police injustices through failed practices, policies, and public relations. ”– Rolonda Watts, Journalist, Author

The Book

Contempt of Cop™ – a phrase I coined which describes what happens when an officer gets angry during a police contact. My definition: when an officer steps outside the boundaries of training and policy and punishes someone because of a failure to comply.

Should a citizen survive the cop’s physical assault, that person will next find themselves shortly thereafter under arrest for interfering or resisting. Attempting to hold court curbside with an officer will get you beat up and arrested every time. You see, there is an unwritten but well-known rule in street policing; When a cop puts hands on you, he can’t just leave you- you must go to jail for something. So be clear, it may not be you right now – but it might be you next.

In this new era of Jim Crow which consists of trumped up traffic stops, unnecessary deadly police shootings, and mass incarceration, I will advocate for you; and shine a light on mistruths, misconceptions and mistakes that could get you killed by a cop.

“This book is amazing!”
– Dr. Drew
